Mittens Has Now Generated More Review Data Than Three Dogs. An Explanation.

The short version

Tucker reviews dog products. Mittens reviews Tucker's methodology. Both have generated more data than expected.

How This Happened

Tucker's review methodology tracks behavioral signals. Mittens produces behavioral signals. When Mittens sits on a product, Tucker records it as the highest-possible endorsement signal — the "Mittens Sits" rating has appeared in three reviews. When Mittens knocks something off a shelf, Tucker records the knockoff frequency. When Mittens ignores something, Tucker records neutral observation.

After 18 months, Mittens has contributed data to 14 of Tucker's 24 completed reviews. This is more data contribution than any single dog in Tucker's evaluation panel other than Tucker's primary evaluation dog.

The Methodology Question

Tucker's original methodology did not account for cat inputs. He designed the evaluation framework for dog product assessment. Mittens introduced herself as a data source by sitting on the Blue Buffalo food bag in month three, which Tucker recorded and subsequently developed into a formal secondary rating category. The cat inputs were not planned. Tucker's methodology adapted to the available data.

The Litter-Robot Situation

The Litter-Robot 4 review exists entirely because Mittens was the subject. Tucker reviews dog products. He reviewed the Litter-Robot because Mittens generated 60 days of health monitoring data that included a real veterinary alert. The data was there. Tucker tracked it. The review followed logically. Tucker notes he did not select this product for review — it selected him, via Mittens.

The State of the Tucker-Mittens Research Relationship

Tucker and Mittens have what Tucker describes as a "productive working relationship with unclear boundaries." Mittens provides independent data that Tucker cannot generate from dog behavior alone. Tucker provides a platform for Mittens's assessments. Neither initiated this arrangement. Both continue to show up for evaluation sessions. Tucker considers this satisfactory.
