Mittens Sat On It: The Highest Rating in Paws History

Mittens's rating system has four levels. "Mittens actively avoided it" means she found it offensive or dangerous. "Mittens ignored it" is neutral. "Mittens knocked it off the shelf" means she approved. "Mittens sat on it" is reserved for products she considers legitimately her own — worthy of occupation.

In eight months of evaluations, Mittens has sat on three products. We're documenting all three because this level of endorsement from Mittens requires a historical record.

Product One: The Furhaven Orthopedic Bed

The first sit-on was the Furhaven dog bed in November 2025. Tucker was present on 65% of the bed at the time. Mittens sat on the remaining 35%. They coexisted in this configuration for 17 minutes. The bed's size allows for this — it's the 36-inch version, which is larger than Tucker strictly requires but now clearly necessary for multi-occupant use.

Current status: Mittens continues to use the Furhaven bed on approximately three occasions per week. Tucker uses it daily. They have developed an informal scheduling system that neither of them has explained to us but both appear to follow.

Product Two: The Da Bird Feather Wand

The feather wand earned Mittens's sit-on in late February, approximately five days after introduction. She had been using it actively for the full five days. On day five she sat on the wand itself — not the handle, the wand portion — in a posture that communicated ownership rather than rest.

Tucker observed this from across the room. He did not interfere with the occupation. His rating of the Da Bird remains one out of five because it is a cat toy and outside his evaluation domain, but he has not challenged Mittens's ownership of it. This is character development of a meaningful kind.

Product Three: Snuffle Mat

Cole's accidental genius. Tucker's second five-star product. And now the third item Mittens has sat on.

Mittens sat on the snuffle mat on a Tuesday afternoon in May. Tucker was in the room. The snuffle mat was not in use at the time — it had been used for Tucker's breakfast and was lying flat on the floor. Mittens walked across it, stopped in the center, and sat down. She remained there for nine minutes.

Tucker watched. He did not approach. He waited until Mittens rose and left, then approached the mat and sniffed it carefully for three seconds before settling into a post-Mittens-departure-protocol that we've observed before: a brief acknowledgment that she was there, and then proceeding as normal.

The snuffle mat gets five stars from Tucker and a sit-on from Mittens. That combination has never happened before in the history of this site. Cole bought it from Instagram without research.

We don't have a theory for what this means. We're documenting it and moving on.
