The iTouchless 13 Gallon Pet-Proof Sensor Trash Can (model DZT13PL) is a stainless steel kitchen can with a touchless sensor lid and a PetGuard lid lock meant to stop pets opening it. From Halloween wrappers to Thanksgiving carcasses, the kitchen bin is the one spot that collects every hazard in the house. The honest caveat: owner evidence for this exact model is thin.
We analyzed 10 owner comments across 3 YouTube reviews, published between 2022 and 2026. That is a thin set, and we want to be upfront about why: only one of the three videos (3 of the 10 comments) is explicitly about a dog-proof iTouchless can; the other two are general reviews of iTouchless sensor cans, and their titles don't say whether they cover the pet-proof version. Only 1 of the 10 comments mentioned the product directly, and it was negative. One mention is not a trend either way, so most of this review rests on what the manufacturer actually specifies.
Late October through Thanksgiving is when the kitchen bin fills with the things you least want your dog eating: candy wrappers, greasy plates, roast scraps, cooked bones, string from the turkey. A bin with a lift-off or swing lid is an open invitation to a dog with a good nose. The job of a can like this is simple: make the bin a closed box that stays closed when you are not in the room.
iTouchless lists the DZT13PL as a 13-gallon (50-litre) can with a fingerprint-proof stainless steel body, an ABS plastic lid, a 12-inch extra-wide opening, and a PetGuard lid lock that it says prevents pets from opening the lid and getting at the trash. The lid opens with a wave over the sensor. It runs on 4 D batteries (not included) or an optional AC adapter sold separately; iTouchless says it draws power only as needed and that batteries may last up to 3 times longer than in other sensor cans. That is the manufacturer's claim, not something owners confirmed. It also includes an AbsorbX carbon odor filter and takes standard 13-gallon bags.
The product page does not explain exactly how the PetGuard lock interacts with the motion sensor, so read the manual and try it with your own dog while you are home before trusting it on Thanksgiving afternoon. A large, determined dog can defeat a lot of household locks.
When we checked in October 2026, the iTouchless product page showed this model as sold out, while other retailers still listed it. Confirm the model number (DZT13PL) on whatever listing you buy from: iTouchless sells several 13-gallon versions, and only the pet-proof ones have the PetGuard lock.
your dog already raids the kitchen bin, or you want the bin locked down before the holiday cooking starts, and you're happy to check the lock against your own dog before relying on it.
you want strong owner proof before you pay, your bin lives somewhere you can simply close a door on, or you'd rather not run a battery-powered can — a plain lidded can inside a closed pantry does the same job.

Holiday food waste can be genuinely dangerous to dogs. Fatty scraps, cooked bones, candy and its wrappers, and moldy food are all things to keep away from your dog, and a dog that has been into the trash may need to be seen even if it seems fine. If your dog has already got into the bin, call your veterinarian now rather than waiting for symptoms. A locking can lowers the odds; it is not a guarantee. Consult your veterinarian for individual pet health decisions.
If your dog treats the kitchen bin as a buffet, a locking lid is the cheapest insurance you'll buy this holiday season — just know the owner evidence for this specific model is thin, check the lock against your own dog while you're home, and keep the worst scraps (bones, fat, string) double-bagged and out of the house.
