PetSafe Martingale Dog Collar Review (2026)

PetSafe Martingale uses a control loop that tightens when the dog backs out, preventing collar escape without the harsh snapping of prong or choke collars. Trainers recommend it for any dog that slips standard collars, especially sighthounds with narrow heads.

The full review

How Martingale Works

The collar has two loops: a large dead loop and a small control loop attached to the leash. When the dog backs away, the leash pull tightens the control loop, which tightens the large loop around the neck — snug, not choking. When forward pressure releases, the collar returns to full size.

Who Actually Needs One

Sighthound breeds: Greyhound, Whippet, Saluki, Borzoi, Italian Greyhound. All have necks wider than their heads. Standard flat collars slip off during backward resistance. Any dog that has escaped a flat collar is a martingale candidate.

Quick verdict

What we love
  • Prevents backing-out without choking
  • Trainer-recommended for sighthounds
  • Even pressure distribution when tightened
Heads up
  • Not for 24-hour wear — remove when unsupervised
  • Slightly more complex than flat collar
✓ Buy it if…

Narrow-headed dogs who back out of flat collars, or any dog that needs gentle escape prevention.

✕ Skip it if…

Dogs who don't escape their collars — a flat collar is simpler and sufficient.

Tucker's bottom line

Essential for sighthound breeds and any escape artist. Unnecessary complication for dogs with standard neck-to-head proportions.

Common questions

Can a martingale collar choke a dog?
Not when fitted correctly. The control loop should not close tight enough to restrict breathing — adjust so two fingers fit between collar and neck at full tightening.
Is it only for sighthounds?
No — any dog that backs out of standard collars benefits. Also popular for dogs who throw tantrums on-leash and jerk their heads backward.
