Silica gel crystals dehydrate solid waste rather than covering it. Dry waste gives off less odor than wet clumped waste, which is the whole premise of a crystal system. We have not measured ambient odor; owner reports generally favor crystals over clay between tray changes, with the caveat that a tray left past its rated life smells worse than fresh clay.
